What the Blog?!

The web is littered with outdated and stale brochure-style websites that haven’t offered their target audience any content in years.

A blog can help you relieve your business of this dilemma, or if you’re taking part in a brand new venture, avoid it altogether. Even huge web-based corporations like Google & Yahoo have gotten into the action — and you can too!

What’s a Blog?

Blogs are platforms that serve as a publicly-accessible journal for an individual or business. Typically, blogs are updated daily and are utilized to keep an audience up-to-date on a particular subject.

Static vs. Dynamic

During the PC boom of the late 90’s, the world of web design became highly accessible to anyone with a computer and a telephone line. Over the years, I have come to realize that small business owners in particular become so anxious to make that jump to the online world that they will hire the first person they can find that maybe-kinda-sorta knows about websites. Usually, it’s a friend of a friend’s cousin or a relative who gets the call. What results for many is a static website that never grows with the business.

Let’s put it this way: Would you invest in accounting software that only allows you 1 entry?

As web technologies progressed, Content Management Systems (CMS) paved the way for true dynamic publishing on the web. This very blog you are reading is a perfect example of a dynamic web system. You will notice that each entry here is categorized by topic and are even archived by date/year. Behind the scenes, this is all automated.

OK, How do I Start Blogging?

There are plenty of free blog service providers out there, the most popular being Blogger & Wordpress. While these are fine for personal use, business owners will find that a free blog may not look very professional to people on the outside looking in because the blog itself is published on another server other than your own. On top of that, many of these providers add their branding materials onto your blog and they offer generic templates that are being used by thousands of other people.

If you’re a small business owner who is serious about implementing a system like this on your existing website, drop us a line and we’ll talk!
